THREE UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS TO USE SKEWERS IN THE KITCHEN

When you think of a kabob, you think of skewers. And when you think of skewers, you think of a kabob. Change the way you think this summer, and check out three unconventional ways you can use skewers to create mouth-watering treats!

RED, WHITE, AND BLUE SKEWERS

Add a pop of color to your weekend celebrations with red, white and blue skewers! This is a fun and easy way to incorporate skewers into your dishes for unexpected surprises that are fresh and flavorful. I’m a huge fan of supporting your local farmers market. That is why I always use fresh, organic fruit from the farmers market in Studio City. You will need blueberries, sliced bananas, strawberries without the stem, and watermelon cut into star shapes. Once you have all of the fruit you need, you can position them on the skewers to create an American Flag platter, watermelon shooting stars, patriotic strawberry cheesecake bites, and other delicious treats. Not only can you make tasty fruit dishes for your red, white and blue themed party, but you can also put tomatoes, mozzarella balls, olives, and basil leaves on skewers to add a touch of color to your party.

PASTA SKEWERS

Everybody likes a good pasta dish. Prepare pasta on a skewer, and they will LOVE it! Try making Italian meatball and pasta sticks. The Italian meatballs are juicy and will keep your guests coming back for more. Once you add the penne pasta and basil leaves, you can either drizzle it with pasta sauce or serve the pasta sauce on the side as a dipping sauce. Don’t stop there. Prepare antipasto skewers or roasted gnocchi, sundried tomato and olive stacks for more exquisite appetizers. They are great for party platters or for having a glass of wine with friends. The key to cooking the perfect pasta is to make sure you are using enough boiling water. The rule of thumb is that you should use one gallon of water for every pound of pasta.

DESSERT SKEWERS

Want to add a new twist to your desserts and satisfy your sweet tooth? It’s easy. Prepare dessert skewers! You can’t go wrong with strawberry and Dutch poffertjes. Poffertjes are mini pancake puffs that are traditionally served with melted butter and sieved powdered sugar. All in the name of thinking outside of the box, you can easily use a skewer to turn them into a unique dish. Craving chocolate? Try making frozen chocolate pineapple pops or cocoa kabobs. Finish them off by sprinkling the frozen chocolate pineapple pops with coconut and coating the cocoa kabobs with various nuts and candies. This will provide more flavors and different textures to send your taste buds on a wild ride. Preparing the same recipes over and over again can get mundane. That is why it is always fun to experiment with different dishes to really make them stand out. Always remember that presentation is everything. Adding a skewer to your dish in a unique and interesting way can completely transform your meal and take it to the next level. So, don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. After all, it is ALL about cooking creative cuisines!
